- How long the day can be. A move with a fixed finish, or one that has to happen inside a set window, is a different shape from one that can simply take as long as it takes.
- What needs taking apart. Anything that has to come apart to leave the room changes the time considerably, and it is the thing people most often assume is included.
Describe those four accurately and a quote will usually hold.
The information that helps most
Short, specific and honest beats detailed and optimistic.
- A rough count rather than a total. Desks, chairs, cabinets, boxes, and roughly how many shelves of anything stored.
- A photograph of anything you are unsure about. Faster than describing it and much harder to misread.
- The floor and the route at both ends, including whether there is a lift and whether it can be used.
- Anything you already suspect is awkward. The thing you are hoping nobody asks about is exactly the thing worth mentioning first.
- And say what you do not know. Unknowns are easy to plan for. Unknowns described as certainties are not.
